10 of the Best Wet Cat Foods for Your Cat to Savour

Wet cat food has more moisture to help support urinary tract health and less calorie dense than dry food. We are all a bit more careful about what we eat and it is also good to care about what we feed our pets. We want your pet to not only look great and healthy but feel healthy and great too.

How do you decide whether to feed your cat wet or dry cat food? What things do you need to consider when feeding your cat? How do you choose which cat food is right for your cat?

Cats are obligate carnivores. Unlike dogs, who are naturally omnivores. This makes them quite different when it comes to nutrient requirements, for example protein. Cats require a higher protein diet than dogs.

Specifically, there are certain amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) which cats cannot make for themselves and which are absolutely essential, these are:

  • Arginine – required for metabolism
  • Taurine – important for eye health, heart, production of bile, and female reproduction.

Cats also require an essential fatty acid called arachdonic acid, and also vitamin A, because they cannot produce their own, and also Niacin, as they cannot easily make this.

Alongside these essentials, some of which are only found in animal or shellfish sources (and hence why a cat shouldn’t be fed a vegetarian diet), a healthy diet for a cat contains:

  • High protein
  • Some fat
  • A small amount of carbohydrate
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Water

Wet or Dry Cat food?

Whether to feed wet or dry cat food is all about choice. One of the main factors to consider when choosing cat food is whether it is Complete or Complimentary. When I did my research into best wet dog foods for example, I didn’t come across any complimentary foods. Cat food however, does vary. If a food is ‘complimentary’ it means that is is not nutritionally complete, and therefore you need to feed it alongside another type of food, likely a dry cat food to ensure your feline friend gets all those essentials.

Dry cat food has the convenience of being able to be left out for longer periods and picked at by your puss whenever she fancies. Ensure fresh water at all times – and if your cat is fussy like mine and prefers ‘moving’ water, consider a cat water fountain. Dry cat food is also better for dental health.

Wet cat food has a much higher water content (about 75% moisture), which may be recommended if your cat has urinary problems for example, but of course it can’t be left out like dry food can. However, wet cat food tends to be much more palatable and tempting and rarely gets left for more than a few moments!

What other factors should I consider?

Every cat is unique, so feeding is not a one size fits all scenario.

Take into account things like:

  • Age
  • Sex
  • Breed
  • Neutered or non-neutered
  • Activity levels (indoor or outdoor cat?)

Another consideration which you might give is whether the food needs to be ‘grain free’ or ‘hypoallergenic’ – because you may see this on cat food labels.

This is quite a big issue when it comes to dog food, however as cats have different requirements, allergies to grains are much less common than they are to things like beef and poultry.

Grains actually can provide some useful vitamins, and the fibre contained in them can even help with the problem of hair balls! However, if your vet has recommended a grain free or other specific diet due to an allergy or intolerance, then these are available and we will highlight grain free recipes here too.

If you decide, or are recommended to feed your cat only wet cat food, do check that it is a complete food for cats.

Just because they are complete, it doesn’t mean you can’t also mix these with dry kibble if you prefer. It simply means that if you choose only to feed wet food, it has everything your cat needs to stay fit and healthy.

We’ve researched what’s out there, and brought 9 of our favourite complete wet cat foods.

Cats can be sensitive to changes in their diet. A slow transition process will help your cat to accept and more easily digest the diet. Wet food has a lot of moisture content and help in digestion. Cats grow fast and at different stages of their life their nutritional needs change. Cats tend to eat little and often as they grow, just make sure there is always water available for quenching their thirst.
